Join me to welcome the new year. Chinese New Year Dinner is a family event. Let us usher in the new year with loads of laughter (very important) and delicious food. It is also an occasion to invite wealth and health.
This banquet features family favourites, the food we have to welcome the new year. We normally have the dishes served together, Malaysian style. However, this time it is not possible as the table is too small! So I will serve some in courses and some will be placed on the table.
Welcome Drinks and Nibbles
We will start by ushering the new year by welcoming great wealth and prosperity. Yee Sang means lots of wealth and growth. We will have a great fun welcoming the year by tossing this salad. Originally, this salad contains raw fish. Yee in Chinese means fish, but it also means wealth, .... so I have a lot of explaining to do when we have the various dishes as most of them have auspicious meanings. I have made this a vegetarian version so all can partake in it.
Kiam Chye Ark
A Penang Nyonya Specialty. This is a traditional soup where you can find in most homes in Penang. It is duck soup slowly cooked over slow fire. The preserved mustard greens and plums makes the soup tangy. The soup also contain Oriental herbs and spices. Let's see how many you can identify.
Lor Bak is a family favourite. As a young girl, it took me many years of spying on the chefs who worked in the kitchen ( when there were communal feasting) to get the recipe. I had to report to my mum the ingredients used, and we experimented, and it is now a family favourite. Lor Bak is pork marinated with oriental spices and wrapped in a thin tofu sheet and deep fried. It is served with a special chilli and plum sauce.
Nyonya Chap Chye
This is mix vegetables Nyonya style. This dish is unique to Penang Nyonyas. The recipe is an old hand-me-down recipe from my mum.
