World Singles day is a festival widespread among young Chinese people to celebrate the fact that they are proud of being single. It started as an obscure "anti-Valentine's" celebration back in the 1990's. Today is the day to show yourself some real love and appreciation, celebrate that you have total control over the remote, rejoice in the fact that you don't have to pick up someone else's wet towels up off the floor and you can keep your home at whatever temperature your heart desires.
We are eating Ottolenghi style tonight so everything will come out of the kitchen as quickly as Alan can carry it.
French beans with yogurt and sprinkled with Za'atar - we had these a few weeks ago in Franks Café Peckham incredibly simple and deliciously moreish.
Chicken with caramelised onions and cardamom rice - this one pot wonder is a great way to cook chicken and rice together, the rice infuses with the chicken juices -STOP you are making me hungry!
Roast butternut squash with sweet corn salsa – on average a corn on the cob has 800 kernels, all lined up in 16 neat rows. You get a lovely crunch from the corn in contrast to the sweet softness of butternut squash. A dressing of chilli, lime, coriander and mint, make every mouth full of this dish a unique taste sensation.
Lamb meatballs with barberries, yogurt and herbs - I made this a few weeks ago for the first time and my sister very kindly said "mmm you can make them again.
And relax .....
For pudding we have warm, gooey, straight out of the oven chocolate brownies served with cream and ice cream.
Then there is the mega cheeseboard - we are going to make a special trip to Waitrose for tonight. There will be a selection of foreign and local cheese some hard, some soft - so soft they are practically gooey served with grapes, walnuts, figs, biscuits, membrillo, a plethora of biscuits. Fresh coffee served with a variety of after dinner mints - not just after eights - tonight we will bring out the posh stuff. There is also Yorkshire tea, mint tea, green tea, liquorice tea, pomegranate and apple tea and decaf coffee if anyone wants one.
