Join us for an evening in The Skip Garden one of London's quirkiest edible gardens for an evening of vegetarian feasting, maukin making and spell casting. We will be guided through the stories and rituals of Halloween by Nell Aubrey, a Historian of Medicine with a pathological interest in all things spooky, having
lived in a series of very creepy old houses.
Welcome bloody cocktail
Disguise course - before we settle down to feast a botanical mask to hide from evil spirits
‘Mountain Oysters’ Sauteed oyster mushrooms, pickled beefsteak and seitan ‘sweet bread’ w/crispy savoy &’oyster aioli’
Spell course - Hazel & Potato Maukin (voodoo dolls)
Hasselback potatoes (we’ve already slashed our mawkins and exposed them to extreme heat.) smokey black or pinto beans, rocket and roast chicory, hazelnut and black olive dressing ( a bit like a chunky tapenade but with chicory and nuts as well.)
Grave Goods, feed your dead people to keep them quiet! Paper gifts to the spirits, worse one gets a prize!
Fennel & shitake broth w/ fennel, apple and radish rice paper roll (save apple seeds for below)
Fertility – superstitions and good fortunes
Sloe gin or amaretto & pumpkin or sweet potato petit fours (amaretto is from almonds whose flavour is shared by seeds and kernels containing arsenic, eg, peach, nectarine and apricot pits and apple seeds)
Chestnuts – crème de maron with pumpkin pie
Apples - apple seeds in the fire

This event was so well organised by some very friendly and sweet hosts. We started the night around a fire, outside, sipping on a cocktail. The dinner started in a nicely decorated room with one long table, beautifully set in the Halloween theme of the evening. This theme continued through the night with things to do such as mask making, necklace lacing and potato head carving. The food was mostly tasty and new to my pallet. There were no meat or dairy products in the meal, but it was still tasty and filling. I especially loved the bean main and the desserts. Many of the ingredients were locally sourced as well. Overall it was a fun night with great food, and great chat.
